Alfred (AJ) McQuarters II, is a passionate cellist whose musical journey began at age 5 at the Merit School of Music in Chicago. A recent graduate of South Pasadena High School and current member of the Inner City Youth Orchestra of Los Angeles, AJ is currently studying in California under the mentorship of Dr. Ben Fried, who has been pivotal in refining his artistry and technique. AJ has also participated in masterclasses with renowned cellists Hans Jørgen Jensen and Andrew Shulman. Prior to relocating to California, AJ studied in Oregon with Diane Chaplin and Dr. Valdine Mishkin, completing level 9 of the American String Teachers Association program. During this time, he performed with the Metropolitan Youth Symphony under Dr. Raúl Gómez-Rojas, the Portland Youth Philharmonic, the Oregon Pro Arte Youth Chamber Orchestra, and BRAVO Youth Orchestra. AJ’s most recent accomplishments include 1st place in the Oregon Music Education Association Solo/Ensemble Competition (2023) and 2nd place in the Southwestern Youth Music Festival (2024). Career highlights include opening for John Legend at Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass’s dinner fundraiser (2023), performing at the Kennedy Center and the Congressional Black Caucus Legislative Weekend (2024), and playing with The Platters (2024). When not performing in the community, AJ teaches beginner cellists.
